A public corporation, established by Parliament in 1972, the Civil Aviation Authority is one of Europe’s leading national aviation authorities and enjoys a global reputation as a best practice regulator. Our activities include economic regulation, airspace policy, safety regulation and consumer protection.
Working in partnership with industry to promote the highest standards and a strong safety culture, we are committed to continuous improvements in aviation safety, both in the UK and in Europe, in co-operation with the European Commission and its European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The face of aviation regulation in Europe is changing and we are entering a particularly exciting, challenging and rewarding time for the CAA, for our Safety Regulation Group (SRG), and for the Aviation Industry as a whole.
We recognise the need for a mature and effective regulatory framework that will meet the demands of Europe’s vibrant aviation industry. We are recognised as an integral and prominent partner within the new European framework and contribute widely to supporting the development of EASA rules and standards.
With safety rulemaking increasingly becoming an EASA function, here at the SRG we are seeing our role embrace a broader context with fresh challenges to be mastered as we help to shape and sustain a world-class regulatory system for Europe.
The CAA and its SRG also continue to play a vital UK role in monitoring the safety performance of what is the largest aviation industry in Europe.
